🌿 Why I Started Scripture Journaling — and Why I Create My Journals This Way
What began during a season of health struggles became a daily rhythm of Scripture, gratitude, prayer, and intentional reflection.
When my health was at its lowest, I started searching Scripture differently.
I had always read the Bible, but suddenly I began noticing just how much God’s Word says about healing, peace, wisdom, rest, stewardship, and the way we live. Verse after verse seemed to speak directly into the places where I was struggling physically, mentally, and spiritually.
So I started slowing down.
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5 ESV
Instead of simply reading and moving on, I began writing the Scriptures down, reflecting on them, and paying attention to what God might be trying to show me through them. Alongside that, I started recording my prayers, gratitude, and notes from my daily Bible reading.
And over time, something changed.
Scripture no longer felt like something I was rushing through to “check off” for the day. It became something I was sitting with. Processing. Returning to. It became part of how I stayed grounded.
What surprised me most was how much this simple practice began shaping not only my spiritual life, but also my mindset, my peace, and even the way I approached my health journey.
I went searching for a journal that combined all of those things together: Scripture reflection, gratitude, prayer, and space for deeper Bible study. But I couldn’t quite find what I was looking for. So, using the same creative skills I had spent years using as a teacher to create learning resources, I decided to make one myself.
At first, it was just for me.
Then a friend asked for one.
Then someone at church noticed it and asked about it, too.
And slowly, what started as a personal practice became something much bigger.
🌿 Why Reflection Became So Important to Me
Quickly, I realized that there is a difference between reading Scripture and truly sitting with it. It’s easy to read a chapter in the morning and forget most of it by the afternoon. Life moves fast. Responsibilities pile up. The mind shifts quickly from one thing to the next.
But writing slows you down.
When I began journaling Scripture, I found myself paying closer attention to what I was reading. Instead of skimming past a verse, I would stop and ask:
What is God trying to show me here?
Why does this stand out to me today?
How does this connect to what I’m walking through right now?
Reflection turns Scripture from something we merely consume into something we begin to process and carry with us. For me, that became incredibly important. Especially during difficult seasons, I realized how easy it was to stay mentally focused on stress, fear, exhaustion, or uncertainty.
When I intentionally reflected on Scripture instead, it began shifting my attention back toward truth. Not because life suddenly became easy, but because I was reminding myself daily where my foundation was supposed to be.
That is also why gratitude became such an important part of my journals. What we focus on shapes us.
His delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. Psalm 1:2-3
Scripture repeatedly calls us to remember, give thanks, and dwell on what is good and true. Even science now supports what many believers have experienced firsthand for years—that gratitude has a powerful impact on mental and even physical well-being.
Recording gratitude each day helped me stop living in constant awareness of what was wrong and start noticing the ways God was still providing, guiding, and sustaining me.
Even in hard seasons, there was always something to thank Him for.
🌸 Why Prayer and Bible Study Are Both Included
Prayer became just as important to me as reflection.
I began to realize how different my days felt when they started with prayer instead of immediately rushing into responsibilities, stress, distractions, or noise. When prayer is missing, it becomes very easy to move through the day relying completely on our own strength, emotions, and understanding. I know for me personally, that often leads to anxiety, exhaustion, and striving.
But prayer reconnects us. It reminds us that we were never meant to carry life alone.
Some mornings, my prayers are long and deeply personal. Other days, they are simple and honest:
“Lord, help me stay grounded today.”
“Give me wisdom.”
“Help me walk closely with You.”
But even those small moments of intentionally turning toward God change the direction of the day.
That is why every journal I create includes space for prayer. Not because there is a perfect formula for it, but because I believe consistent conversation with God changes us over time. Prayer softens us, steadies us, convicts us, comforts us, and reminds us where our help truly comes from.
I also intentionally include space to write about the chapters being read during personal Bible study. This part matters deeply to me.
While themed Scriptures and reflection prompts are powerful, I never wanted these journals to replace daily reading of the Bible itself. Instead, I wanted them to support it. There is something transformative about spending time directly in the Word of God—not just reading isolated verses, but understanding Scripture in its broader context, seeing patterns, noticing themes, and allowing God to speak through entire passages and chapters.
The reflection prompts help slow us down and focus our attention, but the Bible study section creates room to go deeper. Sometimes a single verse stands out. Other times, an entire chapter changes the way you see something. Writing those thoughts down helps preserve what God is teaching in the moment, so it is not quickly forgotten once the day becomes busy again.
Over time, these journals became more than pages to fill out. They became a record of prayers prayed, lessons learned, growth noticed, and reminders of God’s faithfulness through different seasons of life
🌿 Why I Create My Journals Around a Theme
One thing that became very important to me as I continued Scripture journaling was intentional focus. There are seasons in life when certain truths seem to press more deeply on our hearts.
Sometimes we are learning about trust.
Sometimes healing.
Sometimes rest, perseverance, wisdom, surrender, or simply remaining rooted when life feels overwhelming.
I began to notice that when I intentionally spent time reflecting on a specific spiritual focus over several weeks, those Scriptures stayed with me differently.
Instead of reading disconnected verses each day and quickly moving on, I was able to see how different parts of Scripture connected around a deeper theme. It became less about “getting through” a reading plan and more about allowing God to continually shape my perspective over time.
That is why I create my journals around monthly themes.
Not because every month needs a perfect formula, but because I believe spiritual growth often happens in seasons. Just like in nature, there are seasons of planting, pruning, waiting, growing, and bearing fruit.
The themes I create are usually born of what I am personally studying, walking through, praying about, or noticing in Scripture myself. For example, during some of my hardest health struggles, I found myself drawn again and again to verses about healing, peace, wisdom, rest, and stewardship of the body God created.
More recently, themes like being rooted, growing slowly, and trusting God with the fruit have been deeply connected to both my spiritual life and even my time spent gardening.
The themes help create intentional space to slow down and meditate on truths that might otherwise be quickly forgotten in the pace of daily life. They help connect Scripture to real life. Faith is not meant to stay isolated to a few moments in the morning. It shapes how we think, respond, work, rest, speak, and walk through every season we are given.
I think that is why these journals became so meaningful to me over time.
They were never simply about writing on a page. They became a way of walking closely with God through a specific season and paying attention to what He might be trying to grow during it.
🌿 How These Journals Slowly Grew Beyond Me
When I first started creating these journals, they were never meant to become a business or even something widely shared.
I was simply creating something I personally needed.
I needed a place to slow down and reflect. A place to pray honestly, process Scripture more deeply, and stay grounded in what God was teaching me during a difficult season.
So I made one for myself.
Over time, it became part of my daily rhythm. Not perfectly, but consistently enough that I began noticing how much it was shaping my mindset, my spiritual life, and even the way I approached difficult days.
Then one day, a friend asked about it.
Not long after that, someone at church noticed it too and asked where I had found it.
When I explained that I had created it myself, they asked if I could make one for them as well. Looking back now, I think that was the beginning of me realizing this might help other people too.
As a teacher, I have spent years creating learning resources designed to help students engage more deeply, slow down, process information, and make meaningful connections. I have always loved designing resources that are thoughtful, intentional, and easy to use without feeling overwhelming.
Without fully realizing it at first, those same creative and organizational skills naturally began flowing into Scripture journaling. Only this time, instead of helping students process academic concepts, I was creating tools to help people slow down and process truth. That changed the way I viewed the journals completely.
They stopped feeling like simple printable pages and started feeling more like invitations—intentional spaces to sit with God, reflect honestly, and stay connected to Scripture in the middle of busy lives. And honestly, I think many of us are craving that right now.
Life moves quickly. Our attention is constantly pulled in different directions. Even when we want to spend time in the Word, it is easy to rush through it distracted, mentally overwhelmed, or already thinking about the next responsibility waiting for us.
These journals became a way to resist that pace.
Not perfectly. Not legally. Not as another thing to “achieve.”
But simply as a rhythm that helps create room for God to speak into everyday life again.
🌸 What I Hope These Journals Help Others Find
At the heart of it, these journals were never really about creating another devotional product or simply filling pages with words.
What I truly hoped to create was space.
Space to slow down.
Space to listen.
Space to reflect.
Space to remain rooted in God’s Word when life feels loud, rushed, or overwhelming.
I think many of us deeply want to stay connected to God, but we are also carrying full schedules, responsibilities, worries, distractions, and exhaustion. Days move quickly, and before we realize it, we can spend more time consuming information than truly sitting with truth.
That is why intentional rhythms matter so much to me.
Not because I believe there is one perfect way to spend time with God, but because I have personally experienced how transformative it can be to consistently return to Scripture with an open heart, a reflective mind, and a willingness to slow down long enough to listen.
These journals are simply tools to help support that.
The themed Scriptures help create focus.
The reflection questions encourage deeper processing.
The gratitude section helps shift attention toward God’s faithfulness.
The prayer section creates space for honest conversation with Him.
And the Bible study area helps keep us rooted in Scripture itself, not just inspirational thoughts about it.
Over time, what surprised me most was not how much information I gained, but how much awareness I gained.
Awareness of God’s presence.
Awareness of patterns in my thinking.
Awareness of prayers being answered.
Awareness of growth that I may have otherwise overlooked.
Some seasons reflected healing. Some revealed pruning. Some taught patience, trust, surrender, or perseverance. But through all of them, the practice kept bringing me back to the same place:
Remain connected to Him.
That is ultimately what I hope these journals help others find too. Not perfection. Not performance. Not pressure. Just a steady, intentional rhythm of returning to the Word, bringing your heart honestly before God, and allowing Him to shape you over time.
One prayer.
One reflection.
One day at a time. 🌿
If you’ve ever struggled to stay consistent in the Word, felt overwhelmed by the pace of life, or simply longed for a more intentional rhythm with God, you are not alone.
That is exactly why I continue creating these journals.
My hope is not that they become another task to complete, but that they help create space for you to remain rooted in Scripture, reflect more deeply, and notice what God may be doing in your life through each season.
🌿 If this kind of intentional Scripture journaling resonates with you, I’d love for you to explore the journeys and resources shared here at The Faithful Path by becoming a member.
And I’d genuinely love to hear from you:
Have you ever practiced Scripture journaling—or is it something you’ve been wanting to begin?
